Civil Marriage Solemnization Services

The Township of Pelee is pleased to advise that Civil Marriage Solemnization Service is available in the Township. This service provides an alternate to the Justice of the Peace, for applicants who prefer a Marriage Service without religious connotation.

The Township Clerk and Deputy Clerk are available to officiate services.

To utilize the Township Civil Marriage Service, you will require a valid Ontario Marriage Licence, issued within three (3) months of the proposed date of marriage. A licence may be obtained at Township of Pelee Municipal Office, 1045 West Shore Road, Pelee Island, ON N0R 1M0.

A Pre-Service Interview, with both applicants in attendance, shall occur with the Officiant at the Municipal Office prior to the Solemnization Service. This meeting is mandatory and will be about one (1) hour in length. During this meeting, arrangements for the service will be reviewed and specific details will be agreed upon.

A minimum of five (5) persons must be in attendance at the Civil Marriage Solemnization Service, the Officiant, the two (2) applicants to be married, plus two (2) witnesses. It is recommended that witnesses are at least sixteen (16) years of age. If an Interpreter is required, it is the responsibility of the applicants to provide one. The Interpreter is required to attend the Pre-Service Interview and to complete a document at the service. If either applicant is sixteen (16) or seventeen (17) years of age, parental consent is required.

At the discretion of the Officiant, the Pre-Service Interview or the Service may not proceed under certain circumstances.

Fees $275.00 for the civil Marriage Solemnization Service, $100.00 for use of the Council Chambers and grounds (prices do not include H.S.T). Marriage Licence Fee is $125.00. Fees are to be paid by cash, certified cheque or money order at Pre-Service Interview or Prior.
