Browns Road Alvar Site

Nodding Wild OnionLandowner: The Nature Conservancy of Canada, an area approaching 300 hectares.

The vegetation of this reserve is a mosaic of savanna, open woodlands, meadows and thickets. The site contains one of the few known occurrences of Chinquapin Oak and Nodding Wild Onion Savannas in the world. Dominant tree species include Chinquapin Oak, Swamp White Oak, White Oak, Shagbark Hickory, Blue Ash, Hop-hornbeam and hawthorns. Together the alvar, savanna and woodland habitats are crucial to many species at risk, including hibernacula for the endangered Blue Racer Snake.
